Love Notions Crescendo Jeans

I was a tester and I tell you this pattern took me way back to the 70's era I believe.  When I saw the 4 options, I knew immediately I wanted to make the flare version.  I ended up making 3 pairs with one going in the give away pile.

This pattern has 4 leg styles (flare, boot, straight, and skinny), 2 butt options (curvy and straight) and 3 inseam options (petite, standard, and tall).  That is one of the things I love about Love Notions Patterns - you get multiple options.

If you have been too afraid to make a pair of jeans - this is the pattern for you.  It has a faux zipper and an elastic waistband.

Version 1 - Muslin

Version 2 - Disaster

Version 3 - Final

The fabric requirements call for a 10 - 12 oz stretch bottom weight fabric with at least 25% stretch.  Fair warning, if you have lots of curves like me stay away from anything lighter than a 10 - 12 oz fabric unless you go up a size otherwise you get version 2 which is a hot mess.

I did purchase fabric for this project for versions 2 and 3.  I was so disappointed with version 2 and had no other choice but to purchase additional fabric for version 3.  I wanted something in a bright color but there was none to be found at my local JoAnn's.

I sewed versions 1 and 2 the exact same way, with the exact same pattern adjustments and version 2 was a hot hot hot mess.  Amazing how your fabric choice can make such a difference in the outcome.

How I Did It

  • Fabric

    • Version 1 - 10.2oz cotton/spandex denim with about 10% stretch
    • Version 2 - about a 7 or 8 oz denim twill with 25% stretch
    • Version 3 - 11 oz cotton/spandex with about 25% stretch

  • Pattern Adjustments

    • Used the full crotch, petite version for all 3 pairs
    • Cut size 24 for all versions
    • Versions 1 and 2
      • Raise the back rise 1"
      • Raise the back pockets 1"
      • 2" above and below the knee added  1/4"
      • Graded from 22 to 24 at the waistband (caused some puckering)

    • Version 3

      • Raise the back rise 1"
      • Raise the back pockets 1"
      • 2" above and below the knee added  1/4"
      • Added 1/2" for the full length of the side seem

Conclusion

What do I absolutely love about this pattern?

  • No zipper
  • Elastic waistband
  • Easy to sew
  • Extremely comfortable
  • No length adjustments
Love notions gives you plenty of leg options with this pattern and they give you extra butt room (I still needed more).  They thought about the various heights of women by giving you various inseam lengths to cut down on the adjustments you make.  This was the first pair of pants that I dd not need to do a length adjustment.

If you have been too terrified to attempt making a pair of jeans, this would be the perfect pattern a beginner could tackle successfully.

  1. These are really cute. Are they hard for someone who has never sewn any garments before?
