My Painted on Jeans

I don't know where my head was when I cut out these jeans 😂 because I made no adjustments before cutting them out in my good fabric.  I cut this pattern out I believe sometime last year.  My first inclination after trying them on was to put them in the give away pile, but I have learned to walk away for a day or so and things most times magically look different.

How I Did It

I call these my painted on jeans because that is what they look like to me in the hip/thigh area.  They feel absolutely comfortable, but I am not comfortable with the "painted on" look.  I forgot stretch fabric clings to your curves.  Actually I had an opportunity to add 1/2" by cutting the side seam allowance in half.

Earlier I tried the pants and thought I was happy with the fit.  Before I serged the side seam I told myself to try them on one more time, however, I didn't listen to my wiser self 😂.

I was sick when I had used my good fabric without any adjustments and just knew they would go in the give away pile.  I found the shawl in my closet (either a Simplicity or Butterick pattern) and knew that it was what I needed to make the jeans work for me.

  • Fabric

The fabric is an 11oz  Cone Mills S-Gene Mid Weight Stretch Denim in black from Style Maker Fabrics

  • Pattern Adjustments

When I say I made no adjustments that is partly true.  Since I had made other  jeans before and I had made the Cashmerette Ellis skirt, I believe I used the yoke and waistband from the Ellis skirt.

That is the great thing about making something with a yoke and waistband - once you fine tune your adjustments you apply those same adjustments to any yoke and waistband no matter which pattern company you use and it will fit perfectly every time.

    • I chose the pear pelvis
    • Removed a total of 2 1/2" from the inner curve of the yoke
    • Removed 3" from the inner curve of the waistband
    • Remove 2" from the length right before hemming them
I should have also added 1" to the back rise - again I have no idea where my head was.  Now I gone back and made alterations to the pattern so the fit will be to my liking on the next go round.

Conclusion

I love these jeans even though I made some mistakes and they are so comfortable.  The instructions are phenomenal - the instructions for the zipper are the best I have used (imho).  I also love the instructions for the belt loops - so simple and easy.

I will definitely be making these again with my fit adjustments before cutting out my fabric.

What's Next

I have at least one more project that I need to complete and am hoping to get it done before the end of the month.  I definitely want to cut another pair of the Ames jeans out this month.
